New Digs
Well, we've moved in completely, and 99.9% unpacked and arranged. We've switched from getting things organized in the house to getting the outside and the gardens ready. It's a tad late, but it's all coming together. This is the backyard, looking towards the house. You can see the picnic table, there's a firepit just in front of it. The structure to the left and behind the tree is the back of the house. The chicken shaped things are the hippie chicks metal garden chickens. The chicken enclosure is just behind me.
Here's my compost structure. I brought a bunch of compost from the Ranch, and also the year old horse crap. I finished the structure last weekend. It's just smal cinder blocks stacked on one another with stakes to reinforce so it doesn't fall over. We added grass clippings from the mowing. I checked the compost tonight. It's heated up well and hitting the right temperature. Should be some good compost to add to the garden beds this fall.
Here's garden bed #1. It used to be a bed that the past renters hadn't used in probably 4 years. I was digging thick turf. We'll be taking weeds out galore all summer. You can see the lettuces the hippie chick planted last weekend after I had finished turning the bed. We're adding zucchini, squash, eggplant, onion and carrots. We also planted sunflowers, marigolds and a border mix.
I'm working on turning garden bed #2. It's to the right of the picnic table above. It will get full sun all day long this summer. So, it should be totally awesome for our tomatoes. We've got 7 plants now and I want a few more. We're also doing beans, basil, and a few others that I can't remember now.
I wanted a third bed, but it is where a shed used to be and my attempts to dig that soil were as productive as diggin in cement. So, we're planting echinacea, pumpkins and gourds. Should loosen the soil a bit. If it only makes it better for grass, so much the better for the yard.
We love our new digs!!!!
