Adventures in the Valley

A change in career plans led me to the public defender's office. So here are my thoughts on bicycling, brewing, baking and the occasional work crap.

At least it's sunny

Work has been rather hectic and highly frustrating of late. Prosecutors backing out of agreements we've spent hours getting hammered down, Judges basically saying that they don't have the "resources" to assist someone who really, really wants treatment and transition into "normal" life and clients who are either slowly killing themselves with drink and drugs, or actively attempting to kill themselves.

Thankfully, I've got a couple of weeks where I have no trials, which gives me time to get ready for the next slamfest of trials set one after the other.

The most difficult part of working a PD load is the mental health aspect. I continue to get clients who are alleged to have technically violated the law, but really what they need is mental health treatment, and it's so difficult to obtain. They tend to be the most fragile of clients and are the most heartwrenching to work with. Fortunately the prosecutors occasionally have hearts and will work something out, and occasionally a Judge with a smattering of a heart will force a prosecutor into at least pretending to have a heart.

Chickens are producing lots of eggs. One of the roosters is highly aggressive and is attacking some of the more docile hens. We've been putting goop on the pecked hens, but it's still too early to tell. If that don't work, I guess I'll be doing my "duty" again.
